April 2012

Seen some fantastic live music over the last couple of weeks. Tower of Power were as energetic and soulful as I could have imagined, and just when it couldn't get any better, Snarky Puppy took tight and funky to a new level.

The degree of detail in Snarky Puppy's material, their attention to how the music feels above all else, and the understanding between their musicians are all truly things to aspire to. They ran workshops in the daytime, so we were lucky enough to gain a glimpse into the way the incredible machine works, not to mention play with the band itself in a jam session.

Their keenness to share music and inspire other musicians said it all - great performers and great guys. A good place to start is their track Skate U - on YouTube here.

I am still writing for a groove-based, funky, horn-driven group, and I'm getting there slowly. It's really bizarre spending three days a week teaching rules and applications of 'functional harmony', then the rest of the time desperately trying to restrain myself from using those very same rules in original material...
